Battlewagon Started!

The Battlewagon is primed (black), basecoated (Averland Sunset) and washed (Agrax Earthshade).

This provides a good "base color" for the model.  Now I will go back and start layering Averland Sunset to try to build up the yellow color but also to leave some dingy / dirty areas where dirt/dust/grease/grime has accumulated.

Also, start working on the crew.

On a side note, I cleaned my work space and put down new brown paper... really treated myself.

Mid-Tone Done!

Next up, a 50/50 mix of Valejo Flat Yellow and Averland Sunset, to slowly build up the depth of yellow color.

Mid-Tone Progress!

Been picking away at my Burna' Bombah.
So far my progress is: prime black, layer of Averalnd Sunset over the entire model, layer of Devlan Mud over the entire model, mid-tone with Averland Sunset, leaving the spaces between plates.  This also give the armor a 'worn' affect as the paint does not dry 100% evenly and shows some of the darker shaded color below.

Left Side = Averland Sunset + Devlan Mud     Right Side = Mid-tone of Averland Sunset

Order - Build! Build! Build!

I've generated 4 more new objectives in line with the objective secured missions in the 7th edition book.  I like making objectives because it's an easy way to convince myself to make scenery and it's fun.

Scatterfield

Grav-Wave Generator

Booby Traps!

Targeting Relay

Aaaaand... last but not least.  While rooting around in my Bitz-Box I found the 2007 Games Day limited release Orc Warboss!  Forgot I had him ....  I thought he'd make an excellent Ork Big Mek so I set about modifying him.

Introducing... Big Mek Rusty Wotnotz!!

Equipped with a "Power Klaw", Boss Pole, 'Eavy Armor, Da' Fixer Upperz and a bucket of attitude!

Progress on the Morkanaut! AND Pain Boy!

I've finished all the 'Mid-tone' on the whole Morkanaut!  Phew!  Actually, not as much work at doing the Deff Speederz.

So the whole model now has a fairly even coat of Averland Sun.  I left some areas around the rivets and in the cracks darker to start to build up color and convey a sense of age / dirt / grime.  When painting Orks I think about who would be maintaining these vehicles.  Certainly not the Orks themselves... they have slaves for that!  So.. I try to imagine some lowly grot being forced to clean armor, polish boot, load weapons... etc against his will.  Sourly wiping away grime and doing a half ass job ... but doing just enough to avoid being kicked in the teeth... or eaten.

Next layer will be a 50/50 mix of GW's Averland Sun and Vallejo's Model Color Flat Yellow (70.953).

In other news.... while waiting for large expanses of Morkanaut to dry I painted up an Ork Pain Boy!

I love this model.  I love everything about it.  I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out too.  The only dissenting opinion I've heard about this model is that there is only one pose... which I suppose I can concede but . . . I have one of the older metal pain boy models painted up too.

I'm digging this model so much I may buy another one and chop it up to create a Paint Boy on a bike.

Schools Out!

Progress on the Morkanaut!

Base coated with Averland Sun
Washed with Agrax Earthsahde
Started mid-tone with Averland Sun.

So far I've "mid-toned" both legs, and the claw of Mork.  Working on the body now.
Oh, and his base is pretty much done.

A little Update

Progress on the "Deff Skimmaz"

I primed the models black and then did some masking.  I wanted to give each skimmer a personalized look, as if each pilot had taken the time to mark his skimmer.  I masked out different patterns of black stripes along the fuselage and wings of each skimmer and a circle near the front.

Once the masking was done I painted the skimmers with a base coat of Averland Sunset.  I'm just looking for coverage here, it's a first step in.  After the base coat had dried I peeled off the masks and painted the personal glyphs and the front engine intakes on each skimmer in Khorne Red and then washed the entire model with Agrax Earthshade.

This establishes a good base color with shade.  I then starting layering a watered down Averland Sunset on the existing yellow portions, this will be my "mid-tone".

You can see I've started to block out a mid-tone color in the front of this skimmer.  The paint color looks fairly consistent here, but it's not and I prefer it that way.  Because I have watered down the Averland Sunset there are spots that are obviously thinner than others.  I encourage this.  These are Ork vehicles after all and I am trying to convey the idea of "used".

More updates soon... I hope.

Deff Kopta Kit Bash = Deff Speeders

As I might have mentioned, I'm not terribly happy with the Ork Def Koptas, for the same reason I didn't like the Dwarf Gyrocopters; the blades keep snapping off.  So, I'm going to kit bash some Deff Koptas with the AT-43 Karmans King Buggy Unit Box (which I got off from Amazon).

The front and rear guns will come off with a simple twist.  You will have to be gentle or the front grill will come off as well (happened twice).  You can glue the grill back on, it's not a big deal.  The pilot can now essentially be rotated out of the seat by pushing gently on the back of his head.  He's only held on with a single point glue attachment near his rump.

I'm diggin' it already.  I may not have to do a lot of modification to this at all; we'll see what happens.  I am going to try to mimic the front of this 'Deff Speeder' with the front of the Dakka Jet to achieve some unity with the rest of the army.  I may add a rear spoiler or fin...

I'm feeling positive about this kit bash, which is fortunate as ...  I bought a lot of this kit.

The biggest question for me right now is if I add Buzz Saws to 2 of the 'Deff Speeders'.
